Rome, March 19, 2024 (BD Runner Desk): Half of the residents of Gaza are suffering from severe hunger. Famine will hit northern Gaza by May without urgent intervention.
The United Nations-backed IPC on food safety assessment warned in this regard on Monday.
The head of the United Nations World Food Program, Kindi McCain, said that people in Gaza are dying of starvation right now. The hunger and malnutrition crisis in Gaza has become dire.
According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), half of Gaza’s total population of 1.1 million people is facing dire conditions.
Beth Bechdol, Deputy Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said that 50 per cent of the total population is in dire situations. They are on the brink of starvation.
The situation is particularly dire in northern Gaza. Famine can spread here between mid-March and May.
UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths called on Israel to allow free access to aid to the besieged Palestinian territories. He said, there is no time to waste.
Griffiths also said that the international community should bow its head in shame for its failure to prevent famine.
It should be noted that on October 7 of last year, the Palestinian organization Hamas launched a sudden major attack on Israel. In retaliation, Israel launched and continued a brutal operation in Gaza.
The situation in Gaza has become extremely dire in the last five months of attacks. It is not possible to provide the necessary relief.
