United Nations, United States, March 23, 2024 (BDRunner/AFP): A UN Security Council vote on a new resolution calling for an “immediate” ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war was postponed on Monday. Diplomatic sources told AFP the US-led draft resolution was vetoed.
The United States, Israel’s main ally and military backer, submitted a resolution citing the “immediate and lasting need for a cease-fire” and condemning the October 7 attack by Hamas.
Russia and China vetoed that proposal on Friday.
A new ceasefire proposal was intended to go to a vote on Saturday, but was postponed to allow further discussion of the draft, diplomatic sources said.
Hamas fighters killed more than 1,160 people during a deadly incursion into Israel on October 7, according to Israeli official figures. Most of them are civilians.
Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, Israel has killed more than 32,000 civilians in retaliatory operations. Most of them are women and children.
The United Nations has already warned of impending famine in the region.
