Prices of daily necessities have decreased in Rangpur, and shoppers are relieved

BDRunner, March 19: The common people are breathing a sigh of relief as the prices of various vegetables and other daily necessities including potatoes have come down. The prices of beef and poultry eggs have come down. However, the rice market is slightly on the rise.

According to today’s market price, miniket rice is being sold at Tk 90-95 per kg. The price of rice has increased by Tk 3 to 5 depending on the type in the past week. However, vendors say that the price of rice will also come down in a day or two. This time, the price of any product, including daily necessities, has not increased much during Ramadan.

Today, Wednesday, visiting various markets in Rangpur city, tomatoes are priced at 15-20 taka per kilogram, carrots at 20-25 taka, shrimp at 110-120 taka, cauliflower at 15-20 taka per piece, cabbage at 10 taka per piece, rice pumpkin (depending on size) at 40-50 taka, glass banana at 25-30 taka per piece, milkweed at 50-60 taka, sajane at 150-160 taka, small eggplant at 30-35 taka, round eggplant at 45-50 taka, dhans at 70-80 taka, patal at 70-80 taka, beans at 25-30 taka, Barbati at 60-70 taka, papaya at 35-40 taka, cucumber at 30-35 taka, bitter gourd at 60-70 taka, gourd (depending on size) at 25-30 taka, kachur lati at 60-70 taka, lemon at 30-35 taka, coriander at 30-40 taka. Tk, sweet pumpkin 25-30 Tk, dried chili 450-500 Tk and all types of vegetables are being sold at 10 to 20 Tk per piece.

Lokman Hossain, who came to buy vegetables at the city market, told BSS, “The prices of vegetables have been within purchasing power since the beginning of Ramadan. So, there was no need to put extra pressure on buying vegetables on the occasion of Ramadan.”

In the retail market, green chili is being sold at 35-40 Tk per kg, ginger at 100-120 Tk, garlic at 80-90 Tk, and local onion at 25-30 Tk per kg.

Meanwhile, the price of poultry eggs has decreased in the past week. The price of a hen egg in the wholesale market is 32 Tk. However, those eggs are being sold at 36 to 38 Tk in the retail market. Last week, the hen egg in the retail market was 40-41 Tk.

A visit to the market shows that the prices of all types of potatoes are within reach. Cardinal potatoes are being sold at Tk 20 per kg, Shil potatoes at Tk 35, Jhau potatoes at Tk 35 and Bogra’s Lal Pagri potatoes at Tk 25 per kg.

Vegetable seller Rashid Mia of Lalkuti Bazar told BSS that compared to previous years, the prices of almost all types of vegetables are at a tolerable level this Ramadan. Especially the prices of potatoes, onions and chillies are much lower. Along with this, the prices of eggs have also started to decrease. However, the prices are a little high due to the low supply of summer vegetables in the market. And if the supply increases after a few days, the prices will also decrease.

Chicken prices have been stable since the beginning of Ramadan. In the retail market, broiler chicken is being sold at Tk 170-180 per kg, Pakistani golden chicken at Tk 260-280, desi chicken at Tk 500-550 and Pakistani layer at Tk 280-300 per kg. Beef is being sold at Tk 650-670 and mutton at Tk 1000-1100 per kg.

Chicken seller Hossain Ali of City Bazar said that the import of chicken has increased. The fear that there was about the price of chicken during Ramadan is no longer there. The price has been stable since the beginning.

Saiful Islam (55), who came to buy chicken in the same market, told BSS, “I cannot afford to buy beef and mutton, so I rely on golden chicken. The price of this chicken was Tk 350 before the start of Ramadan, now it is available at Tk 250 per kg. This is a relief for low-income people like us. The price of vegetables is also low now.”

Azizur Rahman, who came to buy beef at the city’s Lalkuthi market, said, “Beef has been available at Tk 650 to 680 for the last 15 days. So even low-income people can buy beef if they want.”

A liter of bottled soybean is being sold at Tk 175 and open soybean oil at Tk 180-190 in the retail market. Lentils (chikon) are being sold at 130-140 taka, medium 100-110 taka, moong dal at 160-180 taka, boot dal at 130 taka, sugar at 120-125 taka, cholabut at 100 taka, packet flour at 50 taka, open flour at 40-45 taka and flour at 70 taka per kg.

A search of the rice market revealed that in the retail market, ‘BR-28’ is being sold at 85 taka, jeerashail at 73-75 taka, miniket at 90-95 taka and najirshail at 95-96 taka per kg.

Monir Hossain, a rice seller at City Market, said, ‘The price of rice has increased by 3 to 5 taka depending on the type in the past week. I don’t see any possibility of the price coming down until the new rice comes to the market.’

A visit to the fish market shows that Rui fish is being sold at Tk 270-350 per kg, Mrigel at Tk 220-250, Carpu at Tk 200-220, Pangas at Tk 150-160, Tilapia at Tk 140-160, Katal at Tk 400-450, Bata at Tk 160-180, Shing at Tk 300-400, Silver Carp at Tk 150-250 and Gachi fish at Tk 800-1000 per kg, depending on the size.

Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Rabiul Faisal told BSS, ‘Regular monitoring is being carried out to control the market. The government is taking care that the fasting people do not suffer.’
