Dhaka, March 25 (BDR): Today, March 25, is ‘Genocide Day’. On the occasion of the day, Principal Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said in a message on Monday that on this day in 1971, the Pakistani occupying forces carried out the world’s most barbaric massacre across the country, including Dhaka. He remembered all the martyrs of that night with a sorrowful heart and said that the nation is still mourning this hellish massacre.
The Principal Advisor further said that when Bangladesh was in a state of agitation during the March days of 1971, dictator Yahya secretly left Dhaka on the evening of March 25 amidst the non-cooperation movement. That night, at midnight, Pakistani soldiers conducted ‘Operation Search Light’ and carried out the most brutal massacre in history on sleeping and unarmed people.
Thousands of innocent people, including students, teachers, police and army personnel, were martyred in the ambushes of the invading forces equipped with sophisticated weapons across the country, including Dhaka University, Peelkhana and Rajarbagh. Through their sacrifices, we achieved the desired independence through a long nine-month bloody war of liberation.
He said, the Bangladesh that we wanted after independence, did not have any fundamental rights during the dictatorship that fell in Bangladesh. The nation was freed from the tyranny of the dictatorship due to the heroism of the students and the people in the July Mass Uprising. The interim government wants to move forward by embracing the spirit of the great Liberation War and the July Mass Uprising to build a just society and establish the rule of law.
Praying for the forgiveness of the souls of all the martyrs on the night of March 25, the Chief Advisor said, “The new Bangladesh will develop as a strong, peaceful and democratic country – this is our pledge on Genocide Day.”
