Dhaka, March 25,(BDR): Expressing his firm conviction to prosecute those involved in the genocide during the July Revolution, Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has told the countrymen, “I would like to assure you that those who were involved in the genocide, those who killed people indiscriminately, those who are already recognized by the world as murderers, will be tried on the soil of this country.”
The Chief Adviser said this in his address to the nation on the occasion of the great Independence Day and the holy Eid-ul-Fitr on Tuesday evening.
Regarding the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Dr. Yunus said, “You know, the description of the oppression of the fallen dictatorship has emerged in the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The United Nations has published a detailed report after conducting a thorough investigation into the repression and killings carried out by the Sheikh Hasina government and the Awami League on students, workers, and the public in Bangladesh in July-August.
Noting that the government welcomed this report, he said, “The interim government is seriously considering the recommendations made in the report.”
Professor Yunus said that this report clearly shows that Sheikh Hasina herself ordered security forces to kill protesters. The previous government, the Awami League and the Awami League’s allied groups and organizations were involved in serious human rights violations in a planned manner. The report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights states that about 1,400 people were killed during the protests. About 13 percent of them were children. Being at the forefront of the protests, our July-born girls were attacked by security forces and Awami League supporters, and even sexually abused.
The chief advisor said that everyone’s hair stood on end after reading the UN report. What horror! How can a Prime Minister order to hide the bodies after killing unarmed people of his own country! He has surpassed all the cruelty in the world to cling to power – this is what has emerged in the UN report.
He said that the UN Secretary-General, during his visit to Bangladesh, held separate meetings with members of the National Consensus Commission, political party leaders and youth. In the meeting, everyone told the UN Secretary-General about their dream of forming a ‘new Bangladesh’.
