Silence

Gopal Lahiri

……………………………………….

When the city wakes up in the morning

When all the singing is in the tops

of the coconut palm tree,

I come out in the balcony and throw

seeds to the pigeons.

Sometimes I go to a park.

It has a fixed lane for the morning walkers,

They talk about their cup of gladness.

They live their life in their own way.

There is no argument here.

Sometimes I sit for hours on the bench

stretching my arms to the sky,

pointing my fingers to the flying birds

Whose roof is the sky? I ask them,

and there is the silence I can touch now.
