PABNA, July 04: A total of 21 skeletons have been reported stolen from Aminpur graveyard in Sujanagar upazila of Pabna in the dark of night.
The incident took place at the Birahimpur graveyard in the upazila early on Friday (July 4).
Police and residents said that the relatives of the deceased saw the matter on Friday morning while visiting the grave. They became suspicious when they saw the soil and bamboo poles removed from the graveyard. At that time, they observed the matter and found that the grave had been dug. There were no skeletons inside. Later, the matter became widely known. After receiving the information, the police visited the graveyard.
Locals believe that an organized gang stole 21 skulls and skeletons from this graveyard sometime last night. Locals have demanded that the gang of thieves be arrested following an investigation into the matter.
Residents Faruk Hossain and Monirul Islam said, “Our relatives have been buried in the graveyard. We come to visit the graves every Friday morning after Fajr prayers. Today, when we came, we saw that various graveyards had been cleared of bamboo poles. Later, we saw that there were no skeletons inside, and most of the skulls were missing. We think that an organized gang had stolen the skulls.
Aminpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mostafa confirmed this information and said that immediately after receiving the information, the police visited the graveyard and spoke to the locals. We are looking into the matter seriously. Efforts are being made to identify the gang and arrest them. So far, no one has filed a complaint.
It is worth noting that earlier, several skeletons were stolen from two graveyards in the same upazila, Khas Aminpur and Rajapur areas of Santhia upazila.
