Munshiganj, August 13:-Seven shops, a fertilizer, and a jute warehouse have been submerged in the riverbed due to sudden erosion of the Padma in the traditional Dighirpar Bazar area of Tongibari Upazila of the district. Geo bags and blocks have been laid to prevent erosion.
Tongibari Upazila Executive Officer Mostafizur Rahman said that at 8 pm on Tuesday, a sudden river erosion occurred in the Dighirpar Bazar area due to a whirlwind. At that time, seven shops, a fertilizer and a jute warehouse in Dighirpar Bazar were submerged in the riverbed. The erosion continued till this morning. The erosion was prevented by the Water Development Board by laying geo bags and blocks in the erosion area.
Munshiganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer, Md. Towhidul Islam said that about 30 square meters of area has been damaged by erosion. The Water Development Board has taken immediate action. A project is underway to prevent the Padma River erosion. Already, 60 percent of the work on the project has been completed. The remaining work will be completed by June 2026.
Two trawlers sank while moving the collapsing structures to a safe location. No casualties were reported.
