KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 12
President Ram Chandra Paudel has appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the head of an interim government, as per Article 61 of the Constitution of Nepal.
The decision followed day-long consultations at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas, and meets a key demand of the Gen-Z demonstrators, who are pressing for Parliament’s dissolution and a non-partisan administration, according to Presidential Press Advisor Kiran Pokhrel.
Karki is scheduled to take the oath of office around 9 p.m. tonight.
This marks the first time since the promulgation of Nepal’s new constitution that a prime minister has been appointed under Article 61, which empowers the president to act as head of state and exercise duties in line with constitutional and federal law.
