Train derails in Bhanga, rail traffic halted in southern region for 14 hours

Faridpur, May 10: Two coaches of the Dhaka-Khulna-bound ‘Jahanabad Express’ train derailed at Bhanga Bamankanda Junction due to a wrong signal by a pointman. Train services on the Dhaka-Khulna, Dhaka-Benapole and Dhaka-Rajbari routes have been suspended for 14 hours. 700 passengers have been affected.

The accident took place at around 9:05 pm on Friday. Although the passengers were affected, no casualties were reported.

More than a hundred officials and employees, including two relief trains and cranes from Ishwardi and Khulna, have been continuing the rescue work since this morning to recover the two derailed coaches.

Pakshi Divisional Transport Officer Hasina Khatun said that pointman Nazrul Islam has been dismissed due to his mistake. He changed the signal or point without taking permission from the authorities. A three-member investigation committee has been formed into the incident.

Khairuzzaman Sikder, in-charge of the police outpost at the Bhanga Bamunkanda railway junction, said that passengers left for their destinations in various alternative transports at night after the accident.

He said that although train services were suspended, the situation is under control.

In this regard, Suman Baroi, assistant railway station master of the Bhanga junction, said that the Jehanabad Express train from Dhaka to Khulna derailed after leaving the Bhanga railway junction, a bogie with an engine went off the track some distance away. At that time, the front engine and the luggage van moved from one line to another. There were 600-700 passengers on the train at the time of the accident. They suffered.

He expressed hope that the train line would be operational by noon today.
