Sesame production increases in Manikganj

BDRunner Online:

June 28:-The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said that farmers in seven upazilas of the district have shown increased interest in sesame cultivation due to the possibility of good sesame yield. Due to the interest of farmers, sesame has been cultivated on more land than the set target. It is expected that there will be adequate sesame yield in the current season.

DAE sources said that the target of sesame cultivation was set on 3,971 hectares of land in the current season and the target of sesame production was set at 3,826 tons. However, sesame has been cultivated on a total of 4,097 hectares of land in the district, which is 126 hectares more than the set target.

DAE Manikganj Deputy Director Dr. Robia Noor Ahmed told BSS that the good production of sesame and its fair price over the past few years have encouraged farmers to cultivate sesame. In addition, this year, due to favorable weather conditions in the district, sesame cultivation has exceeded the set target.

He said that the sandy char areas of Harirampur, Shivalaya and Daulatpur upazilas of the district were barren and uncultivated for a long time. Most of those lands are now being brought under sesame cultivation.

Talking to farmers of Harirampur and Daulatpur upazilas, it is known that sesame yields well in barren and fallow lands. Its cultivation method and harvesting are also very easy. That is why farmers in the char areas have become interested in sesame cultivation.

Dr. Robia Noor said that the land of the district, especially the vast char areas of Harirampur, Shivalaya and Daulatpur upazilas, is suitable for sesame cultivation and farmers are getting fair price for their produce. Due to this, sesame cultivation in the district is increasing day by day.
